It carries real risk, managed through structure. Bull sharks are powerful animals and the dive puts you in close proximity to them at depth. What reduces that risk is a pre-dive briefing that covers body positioning and behavior protocols, a maximum group size that keeps the site from becoming chaotic, and instructors who know how individual sharks on this site have behaved across multiple seasons. No operator can guarantee animal behavior. Any operator who tells you otherwise is not being straight with you.

Yes. A minimum PADI Open Water certification plus at least 10 logged dives is required to join this excursion. The site sits at 24 meters, which places it at the lower limit of Open Water depth range, and the conditions demand that you are comfortable managing your buoyancy and air consumption without instructor assistance. If you are not yet certified, a PADI Open Water course can be completed in Akumal before your bull shark dive date.

The aggregation runs from November through March. Female bull sharks return to this specific stretch of coastal water each year during that window, driven by natural breeding behavior. Outside those months, the sharks are not reliably present at the site. If your trip falls between April and October, this is not the dive to book — but Akumal’s reef and turtle dives run year-round.
