World Reef Day serves to call attention to the importance of coral reefs and the threats they face. Coral reefs are incredibly important ecosystems that support a diverse array of marine life and provide numerous benefits to humans, including food, medicine, and tourism. However, coral reefs are under threat from climate change, pollution, overfishing, and other human activities such as unsustainable tourism.

The Cozumel Reef, located off the coast of the Mexican island of Cozumel in the Caribbean Sea, Is part of the Mesoamerican reef – also known as The Great Mayan Reef, due to its location.
This is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, and it extends over 600 miles (1000 km), connecting the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras.
Corals and wildlife are connected across the Mesoamerican Reef, so what happens in Cozumel can affect coral reefs and communities in other nearby countries.

Blue Experience resides in the Riviera Maya, and we know the importance of preserving the health of coral reefs, including the Cozumel Reef. We promote responsible diving practices and educate our clients about the threats facing coral reefs and what they can do to help protect them. By celebrating World Reef Day and raising awareness about the importance of coral reefs, we hope to inspire people to take action to preserve these vital ecosystems for generations to come.
